The incredible health benefits of turmeric

Curcumin is a compound in turmeric with excellent benefits for your body and it is a great tasting spice that can be added to a lot of different recipes with delicious results!

This time last year I was not giving turmeric a second glance.

Oh sure it was in my spice cabinet. I would shake some into the occasional curry. It wasn't, however, until the beginning of 2016 that it started shouting for my attention.

You can get turmeric as a ground spice with varying levels of potency.

One brand I like Simply Organic Turmeric, it is usually available at my local grocery store.

The ground spice is my preferred method of consuming turmeric.

As I said, it works as a spice in curries and soups. One excellent recipe I favor is this Red Lentil Soup with Lemon, delicious in its earthiness, color, and tang. Mmm. Might have to make it this weekend!

You can make a paste with organic turmeric, raw honey, black pepper and create it into a tea. The black pepper greatly helps the body to absorb the curcumin; without it you are not getting the inflammation fighting qualities and it will pass through your system unused.

Many people these days are drinking golden milk, also called turmeric lattes. See my post sharing my favorite recipe.

You can also buy turmeric in its root form. Some recipes for golden milk ask that you use the root. I have not tried it this way yet.

Turmeric tea bags. Perhaps the easiest and less messy (the orange-yellowy spice definitely stains) way to get the health benefits is with tea bags. I LOVE organic pukka brand teas, including the Three Ginger, and Numi brand organic Turmeric Tea.

While I think we should strive to consume as many of our macro and micro nutrients from whole food sources, that is not always possible for a variety of reasons (diet, time, or taste limitations). In that case you can still reap the enormous benefits of turmeric by taking capsules.
